In the hours and days following birth the midwives will
• Perform a comprehensive newborn examination and assist with initial breast feeding sessions
• Offer to administer antibiotic eye ointment for prevention of sexually transmitted infections in your baby's eyes
• Offer to administer a vitamin K injection to the baby to prevent complications from hidden bleeding disorders
• Return to the family’s home 24-36 hours after birth to examine baby, perform newborn metabolic screening, complete birth certificate information and assist with breast feeding
• Return to the family’s home three to five days after birth to check baby and assist with breast feeding
• Stay in close contact by telephone during the six weeks following birth
• Provide 24-hour a day direct phone access
• Postnatal check-ups throughout the first six weeks after the baby is born (more if needed)
